2000 bears, 500 million salmon, and Giles

Not our Giles though, but a photographer called Giles Breton who is off to Kodiak Island, Alaska to spend some time with 2000 kodiak bears. These BEARS need to chow down on enough salmon to put on 3-6 pounds of weight…. per day, until November. This way, they’ll be fat enough to sleep easy in their caves in the mountains during the icy winter that’s not far off now. And Giles is going to photograph it all wearing one of our t-shirts. Here’s a little about how he’s preparing for the trip:

“We hope to capture the best bear images ever taken during the annual salmon run. I dont know exactly where on Kodiak we will be but it will be totally remote. I’m doing quite a bit of fitness work not because its a hard trek every day but to ensure i can run faster than at least 2 of the other bear watchers on this trip. [A] bear will always chase you down and we dont want that to be me (nor anyone else if im honest). My diet is important and part of that is, of course, to have BEAR granola in the mornings.”

We can’t wait to see the photos; just watch this first Giles.

A series of trails taking you deeper into the forest. The adventure trail is a 6 mile woodland trail suitable for the reasonably fit. (Colour coded blue). The trail has several hills and the surface is variable. The off road trails (coded Black) and the green ‘Family Trail’ suitable for beginners and family groups can be accessed from this trail too.

The BEAR team are biking but there are also tons of great jogging and walking trails if preferred. Meet back up after a few loops for a picnic or BBQ

The judges of The Guild of Fine Food have spent the last 2 months blind-tasting* over 6000 entries for the Great Taste Gold Awards. Lucky them. And they decided that our Mango and Pineapple fruit nibbles should get 2 gold stars (of 3), and our Tropical Crunch granola nibbles were worthy of one.

Two stars apparently means that all the judges have to unanimously agree that the product has achieved absolute perfection. Ooooh, check us out. So we’ve spent the whole week patting each other on the backs and dishing out the BEAR hugs.

*here’s a picture that shows the blind tasting – empty contents of BEAR onto plate, before judges enter room. That way there’s no prejudice if a judge was mauled by a BEAR when they were a kid.

Grrr to the Government

The Government is withdrawing all funding from its own healthy eating schemes such as change4life and has announced power is to be given to the food giants such as Mars, Cadbury’s and Coca-Cola in the fight against obesity…

BEAR snarls at this decision and we’re off to the Government to grrrowl our case

Get behind BEAR in campaigning to stop these companies from taking control of the UK obesity battle and help companies such as BEAR, who already care and work hard to provide truly healthy and delicious food to the UK get an equal opportunity in helping get our nation healthier.

Where is the sense in giving power to food giants such as Cadbury's et al to fight obesity when their prime motive is to sell as many products (of the type which contribute to obesity) as possible in order to maximise their revenue and satisfy their shareholders? They do not, and can not have, the best interests of Jo Public at heart! Refined sugar is highly addictive and is the cocaine of the food world. Invite support from food organisations who GENUINELY have the consumers' best interests at heart, particularly those who do not overload and/or base their products on refined sugar or market their products as being low fat (particuarly where that fat has been replaced by copious amounts of sugar)!

This decision is utterly ridiculous and shows that Andrew Lansley is completely ignorant of the health issues facing the naion. By withdrawing all government funding now he is simply setting our health services up to crumble under the pressure of obesity, diabetes and the related medical problems in 15 - 20 years. If the money can't come from government why doesn't he introduce a levy whereby the junk food giants have to pay a percentage of what they spend on their own advertising to specific government healthy living campaigns?? Tat wa the continuity of the messages can continue and the government would be doing a good thing for our benefit.

Companies that offer genuinely healthy, innovative and environmentally sound food products, like Bear, can offer so much to public healthy eating schemes. Their nutritional basis, integrity and commitment would be invaluable. Companies that do not display these commitments, and produce products that actively contradict many healthy eating guidelines(in their high sugar content, saturated fats etc.) negate what such campaigns would declare as their message.

If Americans feel deceived in any way, they’ll sue your sorry behind. Now coffee has ‘This is HOT!’ warnings on it, Milk has ‘Allergy warning: contains milk’. We just came across this ad from the 80s for some fruit roll ups. They look a bit odd and not exactly very fruity. A lady across the pond is now suing the company behind it.

Chatsworth Circular

Put your trainers on and join the BEAR team for an 8 mile circular jog around the Chatsworth estate. It takes you through Stand Wood and visits the lakes that feed both the Cascade and the Emperor fountain. Returning via the delightful estate village of Edensor and later crossing parkland where red deer can be spotted grazing. If you’re not keen on jogging it, come along and hike it. Chances are our Gavin will hike it with you as he is already making his excuses.

We got BEAR out of the woods and into the park yesterday for a spot of early morning exercise with the Londoners. Joining (and scaring) runners and cyclists alike, nibbles were given out in exchange for smiles, and for some, the faster they tried to run away from BEAR, the more determined he was to give them their nibbles.
